Chapter 8

I WANTED TO TAKE A BREATHER, but a message from the rector forced me to think twice about that. I didn’t think he’d manage to fulfill his end of the bargain so quickly. I had no idea what the cunning old man had said to his charges to agree to my contract terms. The fact is, though, that whenever I’m not the one to discuss what prospective mages will get from serving me, the terms frighten them, and when I am the one, they end up so intimidated that they agree to whatever right there on the spot.

And that is why the next thing I did was stop into the lair of the Brotherhood of the Night. My shabby appearance raised a lot of eyebrows among the members, and the leader immediately sent one of his men outside to see what was going on.

“Valdas, take a look out there to see if the city is in ruins.”

“Um, maybe Krego should go instead? Last time it was my turn to risk my life, and so now it’s his turn,” Valdas griped, but the big guy thumped him on the back of the head. I just laughed at that.

“Calm down! There’s no cause for alarm.” But for some reason nobody believed me. So out the door went Valdas, only to return a minute later.

“He’s right. There’s nothing going on out there,” he said, looking relieved.

“Okay, so what happened to you then?” asked the leader, eyes narrowed as he looked at me.

“What makes you think something happened? Is it the way I look?” I asked. “But listen, I have a potentially great job to offer you!”

“Well, that’s more like it,” smiled the big guy with a nod, and he then proposed that we retire to his office. But I saw no point in hiding the details from the others, so I instead suggested that everybody hear my proposal.

“What kind of work?” asked the leader.

“Dangerous, but important, and worthy!” I said, raising my finger and addressing the room at large. “Not far from here is my portal; it’s around two or three days’ journey away. And let me tell you right from the start that I came to your city in peace, but then I was kidnapped! I didn't plan on killing anyone, no; I thought that I could calmly carry out my business and leave, but no...”

“Mikhail, get to the point, please,” the big guy stopped me. “Did you end up having a showdown with someone? Guards? Or some Archmages, maybe? Ah, I get it! Did you kill the rector?”

“What? No, Volodka is first-rate! Why would I kill him?” I asked. “It’s just that these people tried to sell me into slavery. Perhaps I overreacted, but you have to see where I was coming from! I didn’t want to end up as someone’s slave!”

“Who was it? There aren’t many organizations that would dare, and we could, if you wish, exact revenge for a moderate fee,” said the head of the Brotherhood. He was already rubbing his hands in anticipation of some easy money.
